Designed to replace the smaller 456, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti was produced between 2004 and 2010 as a 2+2 executive grand tourer that seats four people comfortably. Only around 3,000 units of the 612 Scaglietti were manufactured, with just 199 featuring a six-speed manual transmission.
Interestingly, the 612 was only the second all-aluminium vehicle developed by Ferrari, with the first being the 360 Modena. The car’s space frame is made from extrusions and castings of the material, while the aluminium body is welded on, making the vehicle lightweight and highly torsionally rigid, resulting in better performance. The 612 Scaglietti is named after Sergio Scaglietti, “the maestro of aluminium,” who created the bodies of some of the most renowned Ferraris. The car shares the same engine as the 575 Superamerica, although its displacement is 5.7 litres, despite the name suggesting it’s a 6.0-liter V12. Nonetheless, it can reach top speeds of almost 200 mph and a 0-60 mph in just 4 seconds.
In 2007, Ferrari introduced the Superfast robotic (F1) gearbox and an electrochromic glass roof that can be tinted and lightened with a simple button push. The One-to-One (OTO) personalization program was also unveiled in 2008, which was a step beyond the existing Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme. This program enabled customers to select from a wide range of options, from leather swatches to brake callipers and everything in between. All Ferrari 612s come with xenon headlights as standard, making them an exclusive vehicle for flagship customers. Xenon gas is used in the headlights, providing a bright light characteristic, and an electric arc between two electrodes is used to produce light, rather than a filament. Xenons are expected to last much longer than their halogen equivalents, sometimes even for the car’s life.
As part of its 60th-anniversary celebration, Ferrari launched a limited-edition version of the 612 in 2007 – the 612 Sessanta (Italian for “sixty”), which was limited to 60 units. The four-seater V12 was produced in a two-tone paint, quilted leather interior, forged 19″ wheels that were larger than standard, and an electrochromic glass roof. The Sessanta was only available to loyal Ferrari customers, making it a highly rare car.
